Valheim Food Guide — Best Foods by Stage of the Game

Valheim food explained: how HP and stamina from food work, the best early, mid and late game food recipes, eitr foods for mages, and cauldron upgrades that unlock the good stuff.

In Valheim your equipment does not decide your health pool — dinner does. Every character has three food slots, each food adds its own HP, stamina and (in the Mistlands era and beyond) eitr, and the meta of every biome boils down to cooking the strongest three dishes your cauldron allows. This guide maps the food ladder from raw boar meat to the Deep North's feast table.

Three slots, no exceptions: the strongest HP food, the strongest stamina food, and the best hybrid on the menu.

How food works

  • Eat up to three different foods; each lasts a long real-time duration before it falls off, shown by little icons above your hotbar.
  • HP, stamina and eitr maximums are the sum of your foods. Eat three stamina-heavy foods for running and swinging; swap toward HP foods when tanking; mages stack eitr foods.
  • Cooked always beats raw: a cooking station over any campfire doubles the value of everything you hunt. Later, the cauldron and its upgrades (spice rack, butcher's table, pots and pans, mortar and pestle, and in 1.0 the smoker) unlock the real recipes.

Early game: Meadows and Black Forest

Forage honey (wild beehives become your first renewable), hunt boar and deer, grill neck tails, and farm carrots once you have a cultivator and seeds. Queens' jam (raspberries plus blueberries) is the classic early stamina food, cooked meat is the HP anchor, and honey keeps hunger cheap. By the time you fight Eikthyr you want three cooked foods, not forage.

Mid game: Swamp through Plains

The cauldron era begins in the Swamp and peaks on the Plains:

  • Sausages — dungeon grease and entrails become your everyday HP food for dozens of hours.
  • Turnip stew and carrot soup stretch garden crops into real stat lines.
  • Bread from barley flour is the stamina king of the mid game.
  • Blood pudding and lox meat pie are the Plains-era HP ceiling, and fish wraps round out the trio for balanced builds.

Fish and barley both require effort — a fishing rod and patience for one, Plains farming for the other — and both pay for themselves immediately.

Late game: Mistlands, Ashlands and the Deep North

Mistlands introduces eitr foods alongside big HP/stamina dishes like misthare supreme, so mages can finally eat for spellcasting. Ashlands pushes both bars higher with its own cauldron line. The 1.0 Deep North adds a whole pantry — moose and seal dishes, kale and oats farming, poteitr, oat milk, oven pancakes, meatballs, smoked fish and the Northern Morning Fare feast — plus new brews, so post-Fader vikings have the largest food menu in the game.

Practical food policy

  1. Upgrade the cauldron chain early in every new biome — recipes, not grinding, raise your stats.
  2. Carry a stack of your top three, plus cheap backup food for long voyages, and re-eat the moment an icon expires rather than after it drops.
  3. Match food to the fight: HP stack for boss tanking and Ashlands survival, stamina stack for building and mountain climbing, eitr stack for staff mages.
  4. Never sail hungry. Serpents and drownings punish low-HP builds more than any troll ever will.
