Valheim on Every Platform — PC, Xbox, PlayStation, Game Pass and Crossplay

Where Valheim plays in 2026: Steam and PC stores, Xbox and PlayStation consoles, Game Pass availability, crossplay between all platforms, and dedicated server basics.
Valheim started as a five-man studio's Steam surprise and now plays everywhere that matters — with crossplay stitching the whole player base into one viking afterlife. Here is the platform picture in the 1.0 era.

Where you can play
- PC (Steam) — the original home; 1.0's engine upgrade raised the ceiling for high-end rigs, and the mod scene lives here.
- PC (Microsoft Store) — the Windows storefront version, one ecosystem with the console Game Pass audience.
- Xbox consoles — full console builds, including Game Pass.
- PlayStation 5 — the Sony arrival brought the saga to a third console family.
The full release launched across the ecosystem on September 9, 2026, and post-launch patches roll out across platforms — the developers note that internal platform rules can stagger a patch's arrival by days per store, but crossplay keeps working regardless, so mixed-platform crews never lose a viking mid-saga.
Crossplay
Crossplay is built in: PC, Xbox and PlayStation players share worlds through the in-game connection flow, no third-party account gymnastics required. Ten-player worlds scale their boss fights to the party, and console players get controller-tuned UI (1.0 added vibration support across platforms, controller key hints and console-specific presets).
Servers: local, community, dedicated
Valheim worlds live either locally (the host's machine runs the world) or on dedicated servers — self-hosted or rented — that keep the tenth world running 24/7. For cross-platform crews, a dedicated server is the standard answer: everyone connects through it, nobody's gaming rig is load-bearing. Server lists, join codes and the community server browser all survived 1.0 intact.
Which platform for whom
- Mod-curious players: PC/Steam, no contest.
- Couch co-op crews: console builds with crossplay to any PC friends.
- Low-commitment tryouts: Game Pass puts the whole saga behind a subscription — a low-risk way to lose your first hundred hours.
