Valheim Arrows & Ammo Guide — Every Arrow, What It's For

Every Valheim arrow and ammunition type explained: wood to carapace tiers, elemental arrows for boss weaknesses, bomb additions in 1.0, and bulk-crafting economics for hunters.
Arrows are Valheim's portable damage-type chart: the right quiver turns a bad matchup into an easy fight, and the wrong one turns a bow into a stick. This guide maps every arrow tier, the elemental choices that matter, and how to keep a hunter fed with ammo without bankrupting a server's feathers.

The tier ladder
- Wood → flint → bronze → iron — the baseline damage climb; bulk-craft iron heads for the Swamp era and never look back.
- Obsidian — Mountain-era, cheap to mass-produce; the Mountain's standard ammo.
- Needle — Plains-era; the highest raw-damage classic arrow and the general-purpose endgame choice.
- Carapace — the Mistlands' top tier; carry for elite engagements.
- 1.0 ammunition — the Deep North adds new ammo types and new bombs to the slot? To the arsenal, extending both ranged and thrown options into the endgame.
The elemental chart
- Fire arrows — The Elder's weakness and a solid answer to troll? To anything flammable in the early game; cheap to make from resin stacks.
- Poison arrows — swamp fauna, wraiths and long-range Bonemass chip (paired with a mace up close).
- Frost arrows — Yagluth's weakness; the silver-era specialty brew.
- Spirit arrows — the anti-undead line; situational, and situational is fine.
Boss weaknesses in one line: Elder burns, Bonemass blunts (bring the mace anyway), Yagluth freezes — everything else dies to the best raw tier you own.
Bulk economics
- Feathers are the bottleneck. Shoot every bird? Collect every feather from beach birds and chests; pair farming runs with feather sweeps.
- Craft in hundreds, not twenties. Arrow crafting UI scales; a hunter's floor is five stacks in the chest at all times.
- Match head to job: raw-damage heads for trash mobs, elemental heads for bosses and elites. Do not burn frost arrows on necks.
- Retrieve selectively: arrows stick where fights happened — loot only safe fields; a corpse run for spent arrows is a bad trade.
Beyond arrows
Bows are not the whole ranged story: spears throw (a free opener on unaware mobs), ooze and bomb throws lane groups, and 1.0's new bombs and ammunition give the late game dedicated siege options for Jotun ranks and arena adds. Keep one thrown option in the hotbar from the Bronze Age onward — sometimes the answer to a shield wall is a black pot with a short fuse.
