Moder Guide — Valheim's Mountain Boss: Dragon Eggs, Ice Breath and Dragon Tears

Published 2026-09-236 min read

How to summon and beat Moder in Valheim: hauling three dragon eggs up the mountain, dodging ice breath and spike volleys, bow-led strategies, and what dragon tears build.

Moder, the mountain dragon-mother, is Valheim's fourth boss — an aerial fight on a frozen summit where the climb with three dragon eggs is honestly harder than the dragon. Here is the full route from egg hunt to artisan table.

Summoning: three dragon eggs

Moder's altar sits high in the Mountain biome (find the vegvisir in mountain cabins and ruins). The summon demands three Dragon Eggs — large, glowing, and found in drake-nesting ledges around the peaks. Each egg is extremely heavy and cannot pass through portals, so plan three dedicated haul expeditions with stamina food, frost resistance mead and a campfire network up the slope. Mark every nest with a map pin; one clean haul per egg, sheltered by mid-mountain fire camps, beats any heroic triple-carry.

Pre-fight prep

  • The best bow you can draw — draugr fang when available, otherwise the strongest Mountain-era bow — with 150+ obsidian or needle arrows.
  • Frost resistance via mead or a wolf fur cape; the summit cold is constant.
  • Silver-tier food and weapons in case she lands on you; a wolf-grade melee option gives punishing windows.

The fight

Moder alternates grounded and flying phases:

  1. Ice breath (grounded): a cone of freezing breath. Rotate behind her or roll through; the slow effect sets up her follow-up, so never eat the full channel.
  2. Ice spike volley: she rears and calls a wave of ice spikes across the arena — a lane attack. Strafe between lanes or sprint through gaps.
  3. Dive claw (flying): she swoops the arena. Watch her silhouette and keep moving; roll at the last beat.
  4. Perch: she lands to rest periodically — this is the melee window and the bow's free-damage phase.

The fight is a war of stamina: arrows in the air whenever she is visible, full-draws during perches, and no greedy melee at any other time. Her attacks chill and slow you — keep stamina banked for rolls and you will never be caught.

Rewards: dragon tears and the tailwind

Moder drops three Dragon Tears plus her trophy. Tears unlock the Artisan Table at your forge — the crafting station behind spinning wheels, windmills and the entire Plains industrial tier. Her power is legendary among vikings: permanent tailwind while sailing for its duration. For ore logistics — iron runs, silver hauls, black metal ferrying — Moder's power saves hours across a campaign. Many veterans never unslot it.
