Valheim Portal Network Guide — Fast Travel Without the Headaches

How Valheim portals work: recipe, tag naming, the no-metals rule, hub-and-spoke network layouts, and naming conventions that keep a big world navigable.

Portals turn a hostile continent into a commute. Built early — they need nothing rarer than surtling cores and fine wood — they are the difference between a five-minute march and a drowning. This page covers the rules, the one big exception, and the network layout veterans converge on.

The basics

A portal costs 20 fine wood, 20 greydwarf eyes and 5 surtling cores, built at your workbench. Portals link by tag: any two portals sharing the same five-letter tag (set with the interact menu) connect; the default tag pairs the first two portals you place. Stand in the shimmer and you cross instantly with everything you carry — but boats stay behind, so never portal away from a beached ship and expect it to follow.

Two rules matter most:

  1. Only two portals per tag. Three portals on one tag break the oldest link; keep exactly one pair per tag.
  2. Metals and their ores do not pass. Copper, tin, iron, silver, black metal, flametal and any ingots of the same stay on the departure side. Everything else — gear, food, trophies, even bosses' trophy loot — travels freely.

The hub-and-spoke layout

The pattern that scales: a hub portal room at your main base with a labeled grid of portal pairs, one spoke per destination. Outposts get exactly two portals: one back to the hub, one exploration portal for the current frontier. Name destinations geographically and alphabetically — SWAMP1, MINE02, NORTH01 — and keep the hub room roofed, defended and firelit; stumbling home at 2% HP through an unlit portal field is how nights get lost.

The ore exception, engineered around

Since metals won't portal, move the smelting to the metal:

  • Black Forest: forward camp with smelter and forge at the copper deposit; ship bronze tools, not ore.
  • Swamp: crypt outposts smelting on site; barge refined iron home in longship batches or portal the gear back for repairs.
  • Mountain/Plains: silver and black metal outposts repeat the pattern.

The only commodity worth sailing raw is volume — a full longship hold of ore per voyage beats a dozen tool-portal trips, so most veterans do both: smelt locally, ferry the surplus.

Portal etiquette for co-op servers

Agree a tag convention on day one — per-player prefixes for private pairs (AA-), numbered public spokes, and a no-deleting rule for hub portals. One griefer? One accidental retag strands a whole expedition in the Mistlands, and tags are the first thing to check when "the portal's broken."
