The Elder Guide — Valheim's Black Forest Boss: Fire, Roots and the Swamp Key
Published 2026-09-236 min read
How to summon and beat The Elder in Valheim: farming ancient seeds, dodging root spikes and vine sweeps, why fire arrows delete the fight, and what the Swamp Key opens.
The Elder is Valheim's second boss: a towering sapling-golem in the Black Forest that teaches the game's real lesson — come with the right damage type or lose. Fire is the whole fight. Here is the walkthrough.

Summoning: ancient seeds
The Elder's altar hides somewhere in every Black Forest; a vegvisir runestone in the forest's ruins points the way when wandering stalls. Summoning costs three Ancient Seeds, dropped by Greydwarf Brutes and Shamans and found in stone-circle ruins and burial chamber chests around the forest. Farm them from brute/shaman patrols near the altar while you build your arena.
Pre-fight prep
- Fire arrows, as many as your feathers allow — The Elder takes bonus fire damage, and this single fact cuts the fight length in half. A bronze atgeir or sword works for melee phases; a fine wood bow with fire arrows does the heavy lifting.
- A minor healing mead and a stamina mead; the Elder himself does not deal poison or fire, so no resistance brew is required.
- Arena: clear fellings around the altar, and identify the four stone pillars — they are your cover against his ranged attacks.
The fight
- Stomp (close range): he rears and slams. Stay behind or beside him, never under.
- Vine sweep: a wide close swipe with his branch-arms. Backstep out of the arc.
- Root spikes: he plants a foot and spikes erupt in lines toward you — keep strafing; standing still is the only way this hits.
- Root summons: he calls attacking root-turrets at range. Kill them or ignore them behind pillars while your arrows chew the boss.
The classic strategy: summon, sprint to a pillar, and empty fire arrows into him between his animations, rolling through spikes when they lane you. Melee-only groups should hug his flanks and punish stomps' recovery frames. He is slow; you are not. The fight is a kiting seminar.
Rewards: the key to iron
The Elder drops the Swamp Key and his trophy. The Swamp Key opens sunken crypts in the Swamp biome — the iron mines of Valheim — which is the entire next progression tier: iron tools, iron weapons, the forge cooler chain and eventually Bonemass's summon materials.
His power — faster chopping — is the builder's favorite. Slot it for base construction days; slot Eikthyr or Bonemass for expeditions.
Common failure modes
- Bringing non-fire arrows and watching the fight take three times longer while adds pile up.
- Fighting at night in rain — wet, cold, and out of stamina regen.
- Ignoring the root adds until they outnumber your arrows. One clean hit each deletes them; keep the field clean.
