Eikthyr Guide — Valheim's First Boss: Summoning, Attacks and Rewards

How to summon and beat Eikthyr in Valheim: the deer trophy ritual, reading the charge and lightning attacks, the easiest arena setup, and what the hard antler unlocks.

Eikthyr is the great stag of the Meadows and Valheim's tutorial boss — but "tutorial" does not mean free. Under-leveled and unprepared, new vikings feed the first altar their whole weekend. Here is the complete playbook.

Summoning

Eikthyr's altar spawns in every Meadows — a ring of stones crowned with a glowing red rune. Explore your spawn peninsula and you will find it; it is rarely more than a few hundred meters out. Summon him by placing two Deer Trophies on the altar. Hunt deer with a crude bow or by stalking with a flint spear; trophies are a chance drop, so expect a morning of hunting — and keep one trophy spare in a chest, because resummoning is possible and nobody wants to re-hunt at midnight.

Pre-fight prep

  • A full stack of wood or flint arrows and the best bow you can draw.
  • A shield (buckler class) for his melee swipes.
  • Food: cooked meat, honey, queens' jam — three slots filled.
  • Arena clear-cutting: chop every tree within sight of the altar and ring it with a fire or two. Trees block arrows and shelter nothing but your panic.

The fight

Eikthyr has three moves, all readable a full second before they land:

  1. Antler charge — he rears, then bulls forward in a line. Sidestep, never backpedal — the charge locks direction on commit, so one well-timed strafe sends him past you into a free arrow window.
  2. Lightning stomp — a close-range AoE with a crackling telegraph. Step out of the circle and shoot; melee players step in and out between stomps.
  3. Melee swipes — only if you stand at his head for too long. Block or parry, punish once, reset.

The bow-centric strategy is dominant: keep 10+ meters, sidestep charges, and plink him down. The whole fight is a two-to-three minute rhythm exercise. If you die, walk back and try again — but note the altar consumes trophies on summon, so bank extras before your first attempt.

Rewards and the power

Eikthyr drops two hard antlers (plus his trophy). Hang the trophy at a sacrificial stone to gain Eikthyr's Power: a five-minute buff that slashes the stamina cost of running and jumping — the best travel power in the early game and still respectable deep into a run.

The hard antlers craft the Antler Pickaxe at your workbench — Valheim's first mining tool and the entire point of the fight. With it, copper veins start falling, and the Bronze Age begins.
