Valheim Map & Navigation Guide — Pins, Sailing Bearings and Never Getting Lost

Published 2026-09-236 min read

Master Valheim's map: pin types and naming discipline, dead-reckoning while sailing, finding vegvisir runestones, cartography table sharing, and route planning for ore runs.

Valheim's map starts as blank fog and becomes the most valuable item on your server — if you mark it well. This guide covers the pin system, sailing bearings, the cartography table and the route-planning habits that keep long expeditions honest.

Pins are a language — speak it consistently

The map supports several pin icon types; the practical set is dots for dangers, markers for resources and the boss icon for altars. Adopt one convention and enforce it:

  • Red — danger: serpent coasts, fuling villages, gjall haunts.
  • Blue — water features: egg ledges, serpents' shallows, harbor mouths.
  • Green — farms and resource groves; yellow — mines and crypts; boss icon — every vegvisir and altar you find.
  • Name pins, don't just place them: CU-DEP04, SWAMP-CRYPT2, EGG-LEDGE. Future-you sails faster with labels.

Finding biomes and altars

Biomes reveal as you enter their fog, but the fastest discovery tool is the vegvisir runestone — every biome's ruins hold stones that reveal a boss altar's location on the map. Make vegvisir-hunting a habit in every new biome; altars discovered early are expeditions planned early. Sailing survey runs along coastlines (daylight, hugs shallows) reveal map edges and biome borders faster than any overland march.

Sailing bearings and dead reckoning

The map's zoom marks your ship's position and heading; plan voyages as straight lines between pins and note where the wind betrays the route. Triangulate by heading: sail a known bearing from a known pin, watch the distance readout, and you can find a coastline in fog or night without hugging it blind. Portals make navigation forgiving; still mark the portal-side pin before a long hop.

Sharing: the cartography table

The cartography table (Haldor's stock) transfers explored map data between players — one circumnavigation becomes the whole server's map. On big servers, funnel every player's exploration through one table at the main base after each session; four partial maps compose into a complete atlas.

1.0 navigation notes

Valheim 1.0's world generation got faster and its save system rebuilt, and the north adds frozen seas to the navigation problem — ice sheets walkable, cracks lethal, and the findbiome and altbiomes console commands (new in 1.0) help map-minded players verify biome edges, including the alternate biome versions that spawn at the world's rim. See the console commands guide for the full list.
