Valheim World Modifiers Guide — Presets, Combat Difficulty, Raids and Portals

How Valheim world modifiers work: every preset from Casual to Hardcore, combat difficulty scaling, raid frequency and portal rules — and how to tailor a world to your group.
World modifiers are Valheim's difficulty dial: a set of toggles at world creation (and via console on running worlds) that reshape combat, raids and portal rules without mods. Whether your group wants a cozy build server or a merciless saga, this guide maps every lever.

The presets
World creation offers named presets that bundle the individual toggles:
- Casual — softened combat for builders and story-tourists.
- Easy — gentler scaling for newcomers and small groups.
- Normal — the intended experience, and the modifier set every balance guide assumes.
- Hard — real teeth; mob stats and raid pressure climb.
- Hardcore — the full-send experience: brutal combat where death costs more than a tombstone run.
Presets are just starting points — each underlying category can be tuned individually after picking one.
Combat
The combat modifier scales enemy health, damage and aggression from very easy to very hard. Lower settings let small crews experience the whole saga without full-kit min-maxing; higher settings turn every plains patrol into a raid check. Note that boss mechanics themselves do not change — Bonemass always punishes the mace-less — so even on casual, the boss guides still apply.
Raids
The raids modifier ranges from none to "much more." Raid-off worlds are the classic builder's paradise — no more "the forest is moving" interrupting a roofline — while raid-maxed worlds turn base defense into the game's core loop. Middle settings keep the base-building incentives (moats, palisades, workbench coverage) without nightly sieges.
Portals
The portals modifier tightens or loosens fast travel — from the standard game's free-for-all tags to harsher rules that make ships and carts matter again. Groups who feel portals erase the survival game's travel half should try a hard-portal world with sailing-guide discipline; groups who value their evenings should not feel guilty leaving it standard.
Changing modifiers mid-game
Console users can adjust modifiers on a running world, which makes them ideal for campaigns that drift — easy-mode a friend's first Bonemass week, then dial back up for the Ashlands. Treat the dial as a group decision; silent difficulty edits have ended more friendships than any deathsquito.
